So this blog thingee is not the first time I’ve tried to write about music: it’s the 15th (roughly). For a long time I ran a site called Bad MonkeyX, which went well until I lost the name to pirates. Then I relaunched it based on a rumour that somebody had once actually liked it, as bmxmusic.com, but the spirit of the thing was dead, and it floundered. I tried it as a blog, which was unfocussed and also floundered. Then I tried to do the thing as a podcast, which was fun, but a lot of work, and also floundered because of a disheartening but hilarious mistake involving my favourite weirdo concept band, the Monkey Power Trio.
MPT and me go way back to the very early days: they picked me to send records to because of the monkey thing, and I dug them, so we’re pals. Until the podcast. The podcast was supposed to celebrate ten years of the band and my enjoyment of them, and did so – but it also revealed a terrible secret: I had been listening to them at the wrong speed a lot of the time. You can hear it all on the podcast, by following this link (it’s a half-hour long).
When I found out, I was pretty embarrassed, although the wry homunculus in my skull was pretty amused at the same time. Now, a year or more later, I think I have a point about the whole speed thing, and I maintain that I Run From Fights and Action Going sound cooler at 45 RPM.
In any case, all of this is to say that I will not be relinquishing my championship of the boyz from Ypsilanti, and to let you know that they have got a new record out – two years worth of recordings (2005 &2006) on a twelve inch album called House of the Mechanical Sun. I imagine you’re supposed to play it at 33, but do what you like. Here’s a couple samples from their site:
peace out.
