Oh Rose Marie, I love you

I bought a second turntable last week – one of the new ones that can feed into the computer via USB port. I was able to digitize vinyl before, but it was a long-ass process which I avoided. I’m glad stereos and computers seem to finally be merging – it’s taken too long. Now I’ll be posting all the crazy shit I’ve been withholding. You’re in for it now.

Last year my bro got me a ton of Andy Kaufman footage from somebody on the net – I love Andy Kaufman a lot, maybe the most. There was a great bit where Kaufman sang a Slim Whitman tune on Letterman (wearing a big swami-diaper and a fake moustache) with great earnesty, and I fell in love with the tune. And it turned out I had it, having grabbed a Whitman Hits record for a buck at some point. I listened to it daily last summer to start my day off right. Check it out, and you will love it too.

Hooray for Bill Cosby and Goodwill!

I grew up listening to my dad’s Bill Cosby records with my brother – the classics Why Is There Air?To Russell, My Brother, Whom I Slept With, and I Started Out As A Child. I found out that he wrote jazz when I found a record by him called Badfoot Brown & the Bunions Bradford Funeral Marching Band, and bought it for the jokes I thought it’d contain. But I never knew he’d done anything this wacked til I found the album pictured to the left.

I found this in a Goodwill bin last Spring, and snatched it up greedily when I saw that he was performing Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band on it. It’s worth a listen – it sounds exactly like Bill Cosby singing Sft. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Awful.

Sonny, the second track I’m offering here, is actually alright, although not being familiar with it, I wonder if the original had any other lyrics than the two or three lines on this version. Anyway. Wikipedia has a full list of Cosby records, including one called Disco Bill – which I also hope to procure for a dollar someday. No more than a dollar.

Mary Margaret video

I was listening to Miss America today – one of my all time favourite records – and thinking how nice it would be if somebody put together an anniversary package. I usually don’t enjoy those cash-grabs, but Miss America could do with a remastering, I think, and I’ve heard that there were a large number of unused tracks recorded for it. And I would pay a lot to hear them.

Later on I thought to look her up on YouTube, and guess what? Good news!
